Liability of Property Owners For Criminal Acts of Third Parties

Is a store owner liable if you are assaulted at the store, by a fellow patron? What if a store patron gets shot during a robbery?

Typically, property owners do not assume liability for the criminal acts committed by others, on the property. Business owners are liable to invitees, to use reasonable care for those invitees' protection. That duty may be discharged simply by calling the police.

While there are generally no duties to protect business invitees from third party criminal assaults, such a duty might arise where there is a "special relationship", like that of landlord-tenant, teacher/school system & student, etc.
